A door that has jumped its track will not move safely in either direction. We realign it and check why it happened in the first place.
A garage door coming off its track is one of the more visibly alarming failures, and also one of the more common reasons people call us on short notice. The door may be hanging at an angle, jammed partway open, or completely stuck. In almost every case, the fix is not simply pushing the door back into the track, it is finding out why it left the track to begin with.
Doors typically come off track for one of a few reasons: a roller has broken and let the panel drop out of the channel, the track itself has been bent, often from a vehicle impact, or a cable snapped and let one side of the door fall unevenly. Each of these needs a different repair, so we identify the cause before attempting to reset the door.
Realigning a door is not a matter of force. The track has to be checked for bends or dents that would cause the door to leave it again, brackets have to be confirmed as securely fastened to the wall framing, and the rollers have to be inspected for wear or breakage. Resetting a door into a damaged track is a temporary fix that tends to fail again quickly.
Once the door is back on track, we run it through several full cycles to confirm it tracks smoothly and does not bind or rub against the weatherstripping, which is often the first sign of a track that is still slightly out of alignment.
Common causes include a broken roller, a bent track from an impact, or an uneven drop caused by a snapped cable. Identifying which one happened determines the correct repair.
We do not recommend it. A door that is off track is often still under spring tension, and forcing it back into place without checking the track and rollers first can cause it to come off again or cause injury.
Not if the underlying cause is addressed. We check the track for damage and replace any worn rollers or cables so the same failure does not repeat shortly after.
